James Stunt is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and gold magnate with an estimated net worth of $5.5 billion. He made his fortune through a number of business endeavors, including gaming, mining, high-end collecting and the transcontinental shipping industry.
The British billionaire is best known for his multimillion-dollar collections, as they are among the most impressive of their kinds. The Stunt car collection contains over 200 rare luxury vehicles, including a fleet of custom bullet proof and bomb proof Mansory Rolls Royces. His wine collection is home to the largest Petrus wine collection in the United States as well as a number of coveted Romanee-Conti, le Pin and Chateau Lafitte Rotchchild wines. Additionally, few private collections have made international headlines quite like the James Stunt art collection. His art catalog includes modern and contemporary pieces; however, he is particularly fond of old master paintings. Stunt’s selection of Sir Peter Lely paintings rivals the Royal Collection.
Stunt’s full art collection includes works from artists such as Sir Godfrey Knelle, Picasso, Degas, Monet and Marc Quinn. His solid gold Quinn “Self” sculpture cost over $12 million. Although among his most expensive pieces, the Marc Quinn is hardly his priciest purchase. In 2013, Stunt famously purchased the world’s most expensive Van Dyck painting for nearly $25 million (£12.5 million), beating a bid by The National Portrait Gallery. Citing concerns over national value, the English government placed a 3 month export ban on the painting, inciting the largest art campaign in British history. Realizing how important the piece was to his country, Stunt withdrew his bid.
In addition to collecting luxurious rarities, James Stunt loves to support charitable organizations and causes. He often loans his prized art to museums and makes sizable donations to organizations such as the Meningitis Trust, Prince’s Trust and Elton John Aids Foundation. He also sponsored the construction of a new pavilion at Bradfield College, his alma mater.
Stunt married Petra Ecclestone, daughter of the Formula 1 Billionaire Bernie Ecclestone at Odescalchi Castle in Rome, Italy in August 2011. The couple has one daughter and twin sons. They share their time between the UK and the US. Their home in America, The Manor, is the largest estate in Los Angeles County.
