Dilip Shanghvi has made a name for himself as India’s wealthiest man by being the founder and driving force behind Sun Pharmaceuticals – India’s most valuable drug company. As of 2015, Forbes listed Shanghvi as the richest man in India and 44th in the world.
Shanghvi began his career by helping his father sell wholesale generic drugs in Kolkata, and through his distribution work, he came up with the idea to manufacture his own. Sun Pharmaceuticals was founded in 1983, in which the first year’s revenue was only $20,000, but has grown tremendously over the years. Today, the company’s market cap stands at $31 billion. Sun Pharma is the most popular pharmaceutical in the US for generic drug products, and the US accounts for 60% of the company’s revenue today.
In 2015, Shanghvi surpassed the long-standing richest man in India, Mukesh Ambani. He has expressed feeling honored with the title, but is not comfortable with the new-found attention.
