Amancio Ortega is a Spanish fashion tycoon that founded Inditex, a conglomerate that controls over 100 different established brands. He was ranked as the richest billionaire in Spain and frequently lands in the top five richest people in the world.
Known as the world’s richest retailer, Ortega started his business as an assistant to a shirtmaker and thereafter founded Zara in 1975. His fashion empire rapidly grew by expanding overseas, which led him to turn his successes into one of the largest personal fortunes in the world.
Ortega is notoriously known for being media shy. During his reign, he granted only a limited number of interviews, and very little information regarding his private life is known about him prior to the early 2000s.
Although he stepped down from his position as chairman of Inditex in 2011, his stakes in the market have defied the Spanish stock market and his fortune continues to rapidly grow.
