With a fortune built on metal and mining operations and investments, Uzbekistan native Alisher Usmanov ranks as Russia’s third richest man, formerly the richest. He is a major player in multiple industries and his far-reaching interests have helped him build a net worth of just under $14 billion. He was dethroned as the richest man in Russia after losing $4.5 billion of his fortune last year.
Usmanov’s empire circles around the steel and iron ore business, as he serves as the majority shareholder with a 45% stake in Russia’s largest iron ore producer, Metalloinvest. He also holds stakes in Russia’s largest business daily, Kommersant, as well as the country’s number two mobile phone operator, MegaFon. He is well-known for taking great interest in the tech industry and has invested large sums of money in the social media market with companies such as Apple, Facebook, AirBnB, Groupon, and many more.
Mr. Usmanov is the founder of many social, educational, and cultural organizations. He heads the International Fencing Federation, and is a former member of the national team of Uzbekistan. He also holds a majority share in the Arsenal Football Club.
